The Pilgrimage
Tour Information
-
8 Days/8 Nights
-
Day One - The Cotswolds
The tour starts with a rousing chorus of the Star Spangled Banner at Gloucester Cathedral, where John Stafford Smith wrote the music that was later adapted as the US National Anthem. Then we explore the history of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams in Worcester, home of one of the most notable Pilgrim Fathers, Edward Winslow.
We then travel to Lincolnshire for an evening at a beautiful country hotel.
Day Two - Lincolnshire
Gainsborough Old Hall is an important part of the Pilgrim story and guests explore the home where many were given sanctuary. We then stop at Lincoln Castle to see the Magna Carta on display in its vaults before heading to Boston to learn about the Pilgrims’ first attempt to flee England and stand in the very cells in which they were imprisoned.
Overnight accommodation will be in Cambridge and guests will have the opportunity to explore this historic English city at their leisure or with our Tour Host.
Day Three - Historic Harwich
First, the group will pause for reflection at the American Memorial Cemetery in Cambridge, a truly peaceful example of the special relationship between the UK and US. The tour then turns to Harwich, the spiritual home of the Mayflower, and visit the home of the ship’s captain, Christopher Jones.
We finish the day with a meal at the Sky Gardens with spectacular views of London in the company of a guest speaker.
Day Four - London
London sets the scene for the time of the Pilgrims with visits to Clink Prison and the National Maritime Museum before heading to the Tower of London. Guests will also be invited to have a pub lunch at the Mayflower Pub, where the famous ship was docked at its time in London.
Day Five - Journey South
Following the Pilgrims, we set off for Plymouth. Our first stop will divert from the core theme of the tour to visit the D-Day Story in Portsmouth before we head to Southampton, the original meeting and departure point for the Mayflower and its sister ship, the Speedwell.
Guests will then have some time to themselves in the beautiful surroundings of Bovey Castle, Dartmoor for dinner and accommodation.
Day Six - Plymouth
Before getting to Plymouth, we visit Buckland Abbey, the home of famous explorer and early colonist, Sir Francis Drake. We then make the short journey to Plymouth to visit the Mayflower Museum and stand on the very steps where the Pilgrims finally boarded their ship as they made their journey to America. We’ll also take in that famous of British traditions, fish and chips.
We finish the day back at Bovey Castle for a private dinner and talk with a guest speaker.
Day Seven - Bath/Woodstock
Our final day begins with a visit to the American Museum in Bath, the only museum dedicated to American decorative arts outside the US and the beautiful gardens which are based on those at Mount Vernon.
Our last stop before London is at Blenheim Palace, ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill before we head back to London where guests can enjoy an evening in Britain’s capital at their leisure.
